As a way to promote exercise and a healthy lifestyle, Mr. Bass’s physical education students at North Elementary are learning the ins and outs of safe biking this week.
“Biking is a great lifelong activity with many health benefits,” Bass said. “We also want students to know and respect the risks of the road. We’re teaching them some fundamentals, such as hand signals, recognizing stop signs, and riding on the correct side of the road. Hopefully students can carry these lessons with them into the summer and stay safe while riding.”
About five years ago, North Elementary received a grant to purchase a fleet of bikes for an indoor exercise program, and they also are used year-round for other activities by the physical education classes.
“We have an amazing fleet of bikes that we use several times during the school year,” Bass said. “I’d like to give a shout out to Mark Plotz and The Smallest Cog bicycle shop in St. Peter. Mark did a great job getting our fleet back into working order.”
Shown above and below, Mrs. Woitas's class takes their turn learning about bike safety and proper techniques with Mr. Bass during physical education class at North. Helmet safety was also a part of the activities.
