For three years, students at North Elementary School have had the opportunity to grow their leadership skills through the “Kindness Crew” initiative. Created by North teacher Bre Landsteiner in 2021, this program brings together third and fourth graders who stand out for their responsibility, dedication, and most importantly, their kindness.

The Kindness Crew meets monthly to prepare short presentations for their classmates, each focused on a unique theme of kindness. A select group of returning members are promoted to leadership roles, recognizing their exceptional contributions.
One such leader is Logan Midthun, a fourth grader in Matt Lewis’s class. Earlier this year, Logan’s kind and thoughtful actions caught the attention of school administrators; one morning, Logan noticed a fellow student struggling to separate from their caregiver at drop-off. Demonstrating empathy and initiative, Logan approached his classmate directly. Within minutes, he had encouraged the student to reenter the school, helping them transition into their day.
Since then, Logan has become one of the Kindness Crew’s go-to helpers, especially for students struggling with feeling homesick. According to his teacher, Mr. Lewis, Logan exemplifies the qualities that make the Kindness Crew special, noting that he is just one of the many members who consistently go “above and beyond” to support their classmates.
“The Kindness Crew has allowed students to have high expectations for each other and hold each other accountable,” says Mr. Lewis. He hopes that the group will continue to flourish for years to come, helping students to develop the confidence to support each other and be leaders wherever they go.
As for Logan, the young philanthropist is looking forward to finishing the year with his friends in the Kindness Crew. Additionally, he hopes this story will inspire his parents, Christina and Peter, to award him a trip to the WOW Zone!
