North STEAM/Art projects

North Elementary fourth graders took part in a joint STEAM/Art class project where they constructed cardboard models of actual cities from around the world.

“This was a collaborative project between myself, in STEAM class, and Mrs. Nyhammer the Art teacher,” Mrs. Schweigert, North Elementary and South Elementary STEAM teacher, said. “We find that incorporating collaborative projects between STEAM and ART help students further enhance their creativity and innovation in both areas.

According to the teachers, the students researched different cities and architecture around the world, and then each class voted on 1-2 cities to build. Each student selected their own structure for the city to create. Structures varied from skyscrapers, statues, bridges, and houses. These also ranged from modern to historical architecture. Students learned about different architectural elements and personalities of each city to help them gain a broader perspective of our world.

After the students built their structure out of cardboard in STEAM class, they painted them and added details in ART class. Then, the students helped arrange the cities for the Arts and Academic night.

“It is a great observation study for students,” Nyhammer said. “To take the time and look for the features that make their building/structure unique or stand out to the viewer.”

“We are so excited about how the projects turned out, and are proud of all the hard work the students put into these projects over the last several weeks,” Schweigert said.

The following is a list of the fourth grade homerooms and the cities they modeled their projects after:

Mrs. Hinton- Dubai
Mr. Hassing- Minneapolis/St Paul
Mr. Lewis- Barcelona
Mrs. Nixon- San Francisco and Paris
Mrs. Friedrich- Tokyo and Morocco
