There will be two events here in St. Peter commemorating the Juneteenth state holiday. The first event, which is part of the second annual Juneteenth Statewide Celebration, is set from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 17 at the St. Peter Community Center. The second event, the presentation of the play ‘Kumbayah: The Juneteenth Story,’ begins at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, June 19 at the Saint Peter High School Performing Arts Center.
Saturday’s festivities at the Community Center include a Freedom Parade, live music, food & drinks, basketball tournament, free haircuts/styles, Black Business Expo, kid activities and so much more.
In addition to the performance at SPHS on Monday of ‘Kumbayah: The Juneteenth Story,’ there will also be a pre-play reception and panel discussion after the performance, in partnership with the Minnesota Humanities Center.
Per the Minnesota Humanities Center’s website, “‘Kumbayah The Juneteenth Story’ was written by Rose McGee is a 90-minute fictitious, two-act play that addresses a factual and traumatic time in our history – when news was deliberately withheld that Black people were no longer to be kept as slaves in this country. Storytelling and music weave together mesmerizing scenes.”
