South Elementary School's Star Pride PBIS recently held its annual Read-A-Thon fundraiser, and South students raised more than $7,000 which will be used for the Star Pride program.
“The Read-A-Thon is South's annual (and only) fundraiser,” Stacy Abel, South Special Education teacher and PBIS committee member as well as one of the Read-A-Thon organizers, said. “Two weeks prior to the event students were given pledge sheets to collect money. The money was turned in earlier this week, counted, and recorded. The top three collectors in each grade level earn a $25 Scholastic gift card, from which they get to pick a book to keep and the rest is spent on books for their classroom. Some teachers allow that student to pick the classroom books, other teachers pick the books themselves. The top collecting class in each grade gets a pizza party.
This year we raised over $7,000! The money goes to pay for Star Pride t-shirts that are given to all kindergarten and any new first grade students each year. It also pays for PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) aka Star Pride, activities and rewards throughout the year. Some of these include movie days, end of the year Activity Day, and other treats and prizes for our students.”
The South Elementary Star Pride Bear made the trek around the building spending time in each classroom throughout the day where students were engaged in reading activities.
