The Saint Peter High School speech team's season is in full swing now, beginning with their first meet at Prior Lake High School on February 3, where a small group competed the first time out. Sophomore Rube Sletta reached the finals in Oral Interpretation and placed seventh in her category, ultimately leading her team. The rest of the St. Peter team members didn't receive a place, but experienced a competitive meet in the AA section, as many of the schools on their schedule this year were in attendance.
(SHOWN ABOVE) 2024 SPHS Speech team members gathered for a quick photo at the Mankato Loyola Invitational earlier this season. Shown here are (l to r) Josie Scrabeck, Ruby Sletta, Ryan Ranft, Sam Szybnski, and Maya Winsell.
As for their meet at Mankato Loyola the following week, there were two finalists, Josie Scrabeck receiving fourth place in Informative (novice) and Sam Szybnski receiving fourth place in Discussion (novice).
On February 17, the Saints traveled to Mankato West for the annual Scarlet Invitational where Maya Winsell placed fifth in Poetry. A week later they made the trek to Mankato East for the Fiesta Invitational where Josie Scrabeck earned second place in the Informative (novice) category.
This program is led by head coach Erika Carlson and assistant coach Jamison Willis, both of whom are excited to see where this season takes them. Willis has been a part of the program for three years now and, together with Carlson, they are working to build upon a team with drive and determination.
“It’s pretty early in the year and we have a bunch of young competitors that are ready to represent St. Peter,” Willis said. “With practices on the calendars, this year’s group is ready to take on what’s coming!”
