Saint Peter Middle School celebrated Indigenous Peoples’ Joy Day on Friday (Jan. 24). The SPPS Office of Education Equity organized three breakout sessions for the eighth grade students this afternoon with a school-wide assembly/closing ceremony to cap the day.
The following is a breakdown of the SPMS Indigenous Peoples’ Joy Day activities that took place on Friday:
Three breakout sessions (in the media center, theater, and choir room) featured:
Steven Tamayo - Indigenous peoples' culture
Alex Ek - Flint knapping
George and Jackson Schoenborn - local perspective on being indigenous
The all-school closing ceremony in the SPMS gym included:
Tipi Raising - Charmayne Klah with indigenous students
Indigenous drum group and dancers - Travis DeCory and the Battle Creek Singers and Dancers group
Indigenous food choices were made available during student lunch times - Build your own bison burger, wild rice pilaf, three-sisters salad and roasted acorn squash. Dessert: Wojapi over vanilla ice cream.
